How wide should an entryway bench be?

39-40 inches is the standard. Almost every closed-storage bench sold in the US is 39.4 in (100 cm) wide, 9-16 in deep and 18-21 in tall. Measure your wall and leave 4 in on each side for the door swing or drawer tilt. Narrow hallways: look for the 9-12 in deep flip-drawer style rather than a 16 in deep cabinet.

Flip drawers, doors or open shelves?

• Flip-up drawers (tilt-out fronts) are the slimmest, 9-12 in deep, and keep dust off shoes. Each tier holds 3-4 pairs of flats or sneakers; boots usually do not fit.
• Cabinet doors with a shelf inside take 15-16 in of depth but fit boots and bigger sizes, and the rattan or cane fronts look like real furniture.
• Open racks are the cheapest ($35-70) but show every shoe and collect dust.

Check the seat weight rating
