Rattan Shoe Cabinet vs Shoe Bench: Which One for a Small Entryway?

Updated September 2026. Short answer: if you have less than 12 in of depth and need to store more than 12 pairs, get the tall flip-door cabinet; if you want somewhere to sit and store 8-15 pairs, get the bench. Details below.

Footprint

A 4-drawer rattan cabinet is 39.4 in wide, only 9.3 in deep and 37.4 in tall - it uses wall height instead of floor space. A storage bench is the same width but 12-16 in deep and 18-21 in tall, so it needs more floor but gives you a seat and a surface at knee height.

How many pairs?

• Tall cabinet, 4 flip drawers: 12-16 pairs (3-4 per drawer). Movable dividers let one drawer take a pair of boots up to 11.5 in tall.
• Bench with 2 flip drawers: 10-15 pairs, no boots.
• Bench with 2 doors and a shelf: 8-12 pairs, boots fit standing.

Seating and top surface

Only the bench gives you a padded seat. The cabinet gives you a 39 x 9 in top for keys and a bottom open shelf for slippers. Many people end up with both: cabinet against the wall, bench under the coat hooks.

Safety

A 37 in tall cabinet is top-heavy when the drawers are open; buy one that ships with an anti-tip kit and use it. Benches do not need anchoring.
